Obituary for David Hinson Hill

DAVID HINSON HILL, C.M., Q.C., B.A. (Hon.), LLB. Member of the Order of Canada 

Queen’s Counsel 

Co-Founder of Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP Law Firm 

The family are sad to report that David Hinson Hill, C.M., Q.C.,  one of the co-founders of the prestigious law firm of Perley Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP passed away on November  18, 2022 at age 82. 

The son of the late Dr. Hinson and Gertrude (nee Bathgate)  Hill, David leaves his wife, Carolyn Elizabeth Hill, his son,  Michael David Hill, his two step children Sheryl Louise Teasell  (Scott) and Trevor Charles Beck (Bobbi) and five step  grandchildren, Philip Teasell, Rebecca Teasell, Elizabeth  Teasell, Spencer Beck and Brandon Beck. 

Born November 27, 1939 at what was then the Ottawa Civic  Hospital, David has been a lifelong resident of Ottawa. He  graduated from Queen’s University with an undergraduate  Honours History B.A. and with a degree in law. He was a  founding partner of Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP  and helped build the firm from the four original partners to  become a major regional law firm with over 60 lawyers and a  practice that is international and national in scope. 

David was known for excellence in the practice of law and a  deep commitment to his clients. He has lectured extensively  and is a published author. He was a strong believer in professional integrity and ethics and brought to his practice a  personal empathy and compassion for his clients. 

A Member of the Order of Canada and a Queen’s Counsel,  David has been involved in a large number of volunteer  activities, holding directorships and officer positions at all  levels – national, provincial and local – particularly in fields of  health, law enforcement, education and politics. 

David was the recipient of multiple honours, including the  Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Golden Jubilee Medals, 125th Anniversary of Confederation of Canada Medal, Canada  Volunteer Award Certificate of Merit, Ottawa United Way  Community Builder Award, Gordon F. Henderson Award of  the County of Carleton Law Association and many others. He  was an Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Cancer  Society and of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.  

David will be missed greatly by his friends, family and former  colleagues. Friends and family may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road ) on Friday, November 25, 2022 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm.  A celebration of his life will take place in the chapel on November 26, 2022 at 11 a.m.
