Obituary for Elmer Vincent Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elmer Smith after a brief illness, at the age of 92. Devoted husband of the late Suzanne Smith (Belanger). Lovingly remembered by his daughters Linda (Mike Camiot), Donna (Fabiano Taucer) and Karen. Cherished grandfather of Simon, Stefano (Andrea Pitts), Marco (Fiorella Rabuffetti) and Julia (Paul Chorley) and proud great grandfather to William. He was born in Fort Agustus, PEI, to the late Philip and May Smith. Predeceased by his brothers Earl and Alphonsus and his sister Edith. He will be fondly remembered by his dear sister Bertha, his brother Ken (Barb) and many cherished nieces and nephews. Elmer graduated from Saint Dunstan’s University in 1948 and McGill University in 1949. He began his career in Research and Development, for Alcan in Arvida, Quebec. In 1973 he joined the Federal Government in Ottawa and from 1978 until he retired in 1991 he was responsible for the STI program at the National Research Council, which was delivered through CISTI (The Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information). Under his direction CISTI evolved as an Institute with a national and international reputation for excellence. Elmer has represented Canada in international organizations such as the General Information Program of UNESCO, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Federation Internationale d’information et de Documentation. He will be remembered fondly by all those who knew him and he will be dearly missed by his loving family who will remember him as a devoted family man, charming, witty, optimistic and so very proud of all of us. Special thank you to Dr. Nicholas Shesko and Dr. Brendan Quinn who took such good care of Elmer over many years and to caregivers Frederick and Nargiza for their compassionate care and support. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Thursday, May 24 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1758 Alta Vista Drive, on Friday, May 25 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception.
