Obituary for William Roscoe Morrison

William Roscoe Morrison
Tragically in his 96th year in South Dundas on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

Adoring husband of Irma, devoted father to Robert (Kathryn) of Houston, TX, Kenneth (Lise) of Calgary, AB and Peter (Lorna) of Williamsburg, ON. He is also survived by his large extended family of whom he was extremely proud, including his many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren living across Canada and in the United States. He was predeceased by his parents and brother.

Born July 25, 1921 in Lindsay, ON, Bill grew up in Wakefield, QC. Enlisting at the age of 21, he served primarily in England, Belgium and Holland during WWII as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers as part of the Railway Operating Group. For his service, Bill received the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp and War Medal 1939-45.

Following the war he continued his work as a heavy equipment operator, joining his father, John, and his brother, Jack, in the J.T. Morrison and Sons Excavating business.

In 1949 he married Irma and raised his family in Ottawa, ON, working many years as an equipment operator and for 15 years operated large conventional and tower cranes, contributing to the construction of some of Ottawa's notable mid-century buildings, including the National Arts Centre.

Upon his retirement, he became an accomplished carpenter, with a particular aptness for designing and fashioning clocks.

Bill was a long-time and enthusiastic member of the congregation of St. David & St. Martin Presbyterian Church, even following his and Irma's move to Morrisburg in recent years. He will be remembered and missed by his fellow congregants there, and by the residents at the Hartford Retirement Residence.

Bill's smile, his love of a good story and a hearty laugh, his enjoyment of a fine tune, and his joy in his family will not be forgotten.

A memorial service in celebration of Bill's life will be held Thursday, March 30, at 11 o'clock in the morning at St. David & St. Martin Presbyterian Church at 444 St. Laurent Blvd, with reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be held at Beechwood Cemetery Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to St. David & St. Martin, The Salvation Army, or the charity of your choosing.
