Obituary for Donald Langdon

Donald Langdon
Passed away peacefully on March 24, 2017, at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, Ottawa, in his 84th year, Don is predeceased by his parents, Annie (née Bull) and Frank Langdon, brother Frank Langdon, his dear wife of 24 years, Yvonne (née Lamouroux), and his beloved wife of 22 years, Benita (née Cransky). Don is dearly missed by his children, Dave (Judy), Suzanne (Peter) and Chris (Linda), stepchildren Jamie (Ann-Barbara) and Tina (Jeff), and grandchildren Sean, Carl, Jeff, Kilmeny, Ula, Greg, Georgia and Ada Lily.
Born in Toronto, Don grew up on Rosethorn Avenue while attending General Mercer Public School, Oakwood Collegiate, Toronto Teacher’s College and University of Toronto. He graduated with a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering in 1956, which led to a long and successful career in the Air Force, with postings to Ottawa, US Navy Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland, the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Dayton, Ohio, Trenton, Winnipeg and Borden. A career highlight: serving as Commandant of the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Ordnance Engineering . From there, Don was posted to AFCENT in the Netherlands, working for the NATO AEW&C Program Management Agency, before returning to Ottawa and retiring with the rank of Colonel, OMM, CD. Don then began a rewarding career as Chief of Systems Engineering for the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), where he investigated the cause of Air India, Gander and Swissair crashes, among many others. It was a job that made a difference, a job that allowed him to use his prodigious problem solving skills and inexorable logic, and he was happy to go to work every day. Don retired from the TSB in 2007, logging more than 50 years of dedicated public service.
Many thanks to the kind and caring staff at the Ottawa Civic and Élisabeth Bruyère Hospitals, where they took such good care of Don and all of us.
Service will be held in the Cwinn Chapel at the Jewish Memorial Gardens, 6549 Herberts Corners Rd. on Sunday, March 26th at 3:00pm. Donations in memory of Donald to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
