The Right Honourable Herb Gray P.C., Q.C., C.C. passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Sharon Sholzberg-Gray. Loving father of Dr. Jonathan Gray (Dr. Rachel Gray) and Elizabeth Gray-Smith (James Smith). Devoted grandfather of Levana, Ziva, Batsheva, Ezra, Ovadya and Raphael Gray and Molly and Lauren Smith. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of warm words of support from across Canada. Herb Gray was Canada’s first Jewish federal cabinet minister. He represented the people of Windsor West for almost 40 years, having first been elected in 1962. During his parliamentary career, he served in numerous cabinet posts and leadership positions in opposition. When he left Parliament in January 2002, he was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. He was given the title, Right Honourable, by the Governor General. He subsequently served as Canadian Chair of the International Joint Commission of Canada and the United States as well as Chancellor of Carleton University. Services will be held at the Congregation Machzikei Hadas, 2310 Virginia Drive, Ottawa, Friday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Machzikei Hadas section of the Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Highway 31 (Bank Street South), Ottawa. Shiva visits at 1534 Featherston Drive, Ottawa, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with evening services at 7:40 p.m. In lieu of flowers please direct donations to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Carleton University or Torah Academy of Ottawa.
